Shrove Tuesday – 4th March 2019

Monday’s worship was led by Miss Jagger and was all about Shrove Tuesday…

After showing the ingredients to the children and then getting a couple of the children, Mr Marshall and Mr Smith to flip some pancakes…she then got down the reason why we have Lent and why we have Shrove Tuesday…

Traditionally, Shrove Tuesday is associated with pancakes being eaten. This was the last chance to eat rich foods before Lent, and an opportunity to use up all of the luxury foods (such as fat, butter and eggs – which British pancakes are made of) which might go off during Lent. According to some websites – in France and the French-speaking and Catholic communities of the United States, they refer to Shrove Tuesday as Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday).

Lent is the period of 40 days which comes before Easter in the Christian calendar. It is a season of reflection and preparation before the celebrations of Easter. By observing the 40 days of Lent, Christians replicate Jesus Christ’s sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days.

During Lent, in school we will be saying this Lenten Prayer:

Loving and compassionate God,

We are sorry for those things that we have done wrong.

Teach us to show love and forgiveness to each other.

As we journey through Lent, inspire us to be generous and kind.

Through our joy, patience and kindness,

May we help to build a better World.

Amen
